There is no single best way to brew coffee, only the best way for the result you want. Here is how the main home brewing methods actually compare.
French press
Coarse ground coffee steeped in hot water, then separated with a mesh plunger. Produces a full bodied, slightly heavier cup since fine sediment passes through the mesh. Minimal equipment needed, and it is forgiving of imprecise timing. Best for people who want a rich, textured cup without much technique.
Pour over
Hot water poured slowly over a filter and medium-fine grounds, letting gravity do the extraction. Produces a cleaner, brighter cup than a French press since the paper filter removes oils and fine particles. Requires more technique and a slower pace, but rewards it with clarity of flavour, particularly for lighter roasts.
Moka pot
A stovetop device that forces pressurised hot water up through finely ground coffee. Produces a strong, concentrated coffee closer to espresso than filter coffee, though not quite the same. Good for anyone who wants an espresso-like base for milk drinks without buying a machine.
AeroPress
A manual device using air pressure to push water through the grounds quickly. Produces a clean, smooth cup similar to pour over but faster, and it is compact enough to travel with. A strong middle ground between convenience and quality.
Espresso machine
Uses high pressure to force hot water through very finely ground, tightly packed coffee in seconds. Produces the most concentrated, syrupy coffee of any method, and is the base for milk drinks like lattes and flat whites. Requires the most equipment and the steepest learning curve.
Which one to choose
- Want simplicity and a rich cup: French press
- Want clarity and are willing to slow down: pour over
- Want something strong without an espresso machine: moka pot
- Want speed and portability: AeroPress
- Want milk-based drinks at home: espresso machine
Whichever method you land on, stirring in a flavoured sugar like Dirty Vanilla or Midnight Mocha works the same way regardless of how the coffee itself was brewed.
