Flavoured Sugar FAQ: Answers to the Most Common Questions

Flavoured Sugar FAQ: Answers to the Most Common Questions

This is a running list of the questions we get asked most often about flavoured sugar, kept short and specific rather than repeating the longer guides elsewhere on The Log. If your question is not answered here, email hello@crushandcane.com and we will get back to you.

What is flavoured sugar?

Flavoured sugar is sugar, usually cane, demerara or muscovado, blended with real flavouring such as vanilla, fruit powder or cocoa, designed to add flavour and sweetness in one step. For a full explanation, see What Is Flavoured Sugar? A Complete Guide.

Is flavoured sugar the same as flavoured syrup?

No. Syrup is a liquid, usually sugar dissolved in water with flavouring added, dispensed with a pump. Flavoured sugar is dry and granulated, dissolves directly into a hot drink, and generally uses more concentrated, less diluted flavouring since it is not carrying the water weight a syrup does.

How much should I use?

A standard teaspoon, around 4 to 5 grams, is the typical serving for a mug of coffee or tea. Start there and adjust to taste, since flavour strength varies slightly by Drop.

Does flavoured sugar go off?

It does not spoil in the way fresh food does, but it will clump and lose flavour intensity over time if stored badly. Kept airtight and dry, it stays good for around 6 to 9 months. See our full guide on how to store flavoured sugar.

Can I bake with it?

Yes, in most cases as a 1:1 swap for plain sugar. See our substitution guide for ratios by flavour.

Is it vegan or gluten free?

Our four Drops contain no dairy, honey or animal derived flavourings, and none of the ingredients are gluten containing. Always check the allergen statement on the specific pouch. Full detail in Is Flavoured Sugar Vegan and Gluten-Free?

Why does my flavoured sugar clump?

Flavouring ingredients like fruit powder and cocoa attract moisture more than plain sugar does. Kept sealed, dry and away from heat, it should stay loose. If it has already clumped, breaking it up with a fork usually fixes it.

How is it different from just sprinkling sugar and vanilla extract on something?

Liquid extract adds moisture, which can affect texture in baking and cause clumping in dry mixes. Flavoured sugar carries the flavour in dry form, so it behaves like ordinary sugar structurally while adding real flavour.

Where is Crush & Cane made?

Every pouch is hand packed in our workshop at 30 Bark Hart Road, Orpington. Read more in Why We Hand-Pack Every Pouch in London.

Which flavour should I start with?

Dirty Vanilla is the most versatile if you are not sure, since it works across coffee, baking and desserts. Juicy Strawberry suits cocktails and drinks best, Midnight Mocha suits coffee and chocolate bakes, and Spiced Chai suits chai lattes, porridge and autumn baking. The Full Set lets you try all four.
