How To Rim A Cocktail Glass With Flavoured Sugar

A sugared rim turns an ordinary glass into something that looks intentional before a single sip. It takes under a minute and the technique barely changes no matter what you are pouring.

What you need

  • A shallow plate or saucer, wider than the rim of your glass
  • Something to wet the rim: a citrus wedge, simple syrup, or a damp cloth
  • Flavoured sugar, such as Juicy Strawberry

The method

  1. Pour a thin, even layer of flavoured sugar onto the plate, enough to cover the rim of your glass.
  2. Run a citrus wedge or a damp cloth around the outside edge of the glass rim. Keep it thin. Too much liquid means clumping sugar.
  3. Turn the glass upside down and roll the rim through the sugar, rotating once or twice for even coverage.
  4. Tap off any excess and set the glass upright.

Getting a clean edge

If you want the sugar on the outside only, tilt the glass at an angle while dipping instead of going straight down, so the wet ring stays below the rim. For a half rim, just wet and dip one side.

What to pair it with

Juicy Strawberry works well on a strawberry daiquiri, a mojito, or a simple vodka and lemonade. For something warmer, Dirty Vanilla rims an espresso martini nicely, and Midnight Mocha is built for anything with chocolate or coffee liqueur in it.

Since it is real sugar and not a syrup, it holds its texture on the glass instead of dissolving into a sticky mess. Grab a pouch from the shop and try it on your next round.
